  • What is a rational organization?

    Organizations are collectivities oriented to the pursuit of relatively specific goals. They are “purposeful” in the sense that the activities and interactions of participants are coordinated to achieve specific goals. Goals are specific to the extent that they are explicit, are clearly defined, and provide unambiguous criteria for selecting among alternative activities
  • What is rational organizational design?

    As championed by Fayol, the design of bureaucratic features in the most technically efficient way so as to achieve the organization's goals.
  • What is a network?

    Where organizations are linked by sharing data through computer networks or through the internet.
  • What are Fayol's (Rational organizational design - bureaucracy) five functions of management?

    1. Planning/forecasting
    2. Organizing
    3. Coordinating
    4. Commanding
    5. Controlling
  • What is bureaucratic standardization?

    The formal instructions within the organization; Rules, policies and procedures. Aiming for impersonal fairness (all workers treated equally through the instructions) and removing discretion (ability from manager to make own autonomous judgements).
  • What are bureaucratic records and paperwork?

    The official documentation within an organization. Typified by pro-forma, blank template with standard fields for different types of relevant information). Two purposes: information about the organization and its workers in order to implement rules and procedures, and surveillance/monitoring of employees.
  • What is rational-legal authority? (Weber-Sociologist)

    Where authority comes neither from tradition nor from the charisma of an individual, but from the office they hold and the bureaucratic rules and procedures associated with that position.
  • What is formal rationality? (Weber)

    A technical form of rationality which finds the most efficient means to achieving ends. (but this does not mean that pursuing those ends is rational in human terms).
  • What is substantive rationality? (Weber)

    To take account of the effects of actions in human and ethical terms.
