Quantitative and qualitative approaches

3 important questions on Quantitative and qualitative approaches

What is the case study method?

The intensive study of a single case with the purpose to shed light on a larger class of cases.

The typical procedure:
  • note an outcome in the case under exam
  • try to ascertain what causal factor acting in the case was responsible for that outcome
      • example of qualitative method

What cases may a researcher choose from?

  1. Typical case: highly representative instance
  2. Extreme case: may reveal causal relations most strongly
  3. Crucial case: paradigmatic for a category
  4. Deviant case: anomaly, may help pinpoint limitations of a theory
  5. Counterfactual case: ''what if'' scenario that departs from reality, helps isolate contribution of causal factors.

What is the difference between internal- and external validity?

Internal validity is the degree to which a study's findings are warranted for the case studied.

external validity is the degree to which a study's conclusions are generalized.

The question on the page originate from the summary of the following study material:

  • A unique study and practice tool
  • Never study anything twice again
  • Get the grades you hope for
  • 100% sure, 100% understanding
