Chemisty and life - The carbon cycle

7 important questions on Chemisty and life - The carbon cycle

Short-term carbon cycle

Carbon is present in in the air in carbon dioxide. In photosynthesis it is seperated into glucose and then into all kinds of other compounds in living organisms. CO2 is produced again during combustion and decomposition

Long-term carbon cycle

Animals and plants decompose, carbon ends up in the Earths crust. That makes fossils. We now use these fossils as fuel. CO2 is produced again when this fuel is burned

For what are fossil fuels used

To generate electricity in power plants and as fuel for vehicles

Why is the carbon cycle out of balance

Because the use of fossil fuels has increased a lot, that more CO2 is added to the atmosphere than absorbed

What do greenhouse gasses do

They partially absorb infraded radiation and reflect it back

How can the use of fossil fuels be reduced

By using renewable energy or the short-term carbon cycle

From what can biogas or bioethanol be extracted

From organic waste
