quantitative research: aims only at a limited amount of information provided by a large number of people. this research is more about a lot of questionnaires  * the number of people asked in order to gather information. 

Descriptive, explanatory, evaluation research

descriptive research: used to find out and to describe what actually is in order to provide data which is up-to-date. 

explanatory research: the next step after exploring and describing situations. this is used to explain the reasons for changes or certain situations. 

evaluation research: is used to measure the success of a program or policy.

Types of tourists (Cohen, 1972)

Organized mass tourist: takes highly organized package holiday and has minimal contact with the host community, holidaying within an environmental bubble. 

Independent mass tourist: uses similar facilities to the organized mass tourist but also wants to break away from the norma and to visit other sights not covered on organized tours in the destination. 

explorer: arranges their travel independently and wishes to experience the social and cultural lifestyle of the destination. 

drifter: does not seek any contact with other tourists or the organized tourism industry, preferring to live with the host community.
