What is Oedipus complex?

Boy has sexual desires for mother, feelings of jealousy and hatred for the rival father. Sees father as rival but they are afraid that father will punish them for their feelings for mother by castrating them. Out of fear, boys will identify with father rather than fight him. By identifying with father, the boy develops masculine characteristics and identifies himself as a male and represses sexual feelings towards mother.
