Set up a controlled laboratory experiment, by assigning the participants randomly to two groups. Read one group the story, while the picture is beamed on the board behind you, and ask them to write down what they remember. Repeat this for the second group, but without the picture.

Schemas are frameworks or organising structures for knowledge that allows us to retrieve it more easily. However, because they are shaped by our culture and experience, they also shape what we remember. Think of the folders on your computer - if you have put a picture of your sister and you surfing on holiday under 'family' then you may well forget that this is in fact a holiday photo that you wanted to share with others. Your organisational structure has changed your memory of it.
