Combustion

10 important questions on Combustion

What is the visible fire?

flames: a flame is a quantity of gas in visible combustion (glowing)
sparks: a spark is a brilliantly luminous, small, solid particle flying through the air.

What will you find after a combustion reaction?

smoke: a suspension in the atmosphere of small particles produced by combustion
ash: the incombustible matter remaining after incineration (verbranding) of a substance or a solid reaction product that is not finely divided

What happens on the ombustion of a compound?

two or more oxides can be formed. Every element in the compound will form its own oxide. All that is, except the element oxygen.

What happens if the oxygens supply is insufficient?

an incomplete combustion will follow. e.g. C (soot) is formed instead of CO2.

What is a reagent?

a substance that will change visibly in contact with the substance you want to identify.

Which two requirements does a reagent need to have?

selective: Should only react with the substance you want to identify
sensitive: the reagent will change visibly with a minimal amount of the substance you want to identify.

For what is white copper sulphate a reagent?

for water, with water (l) or water (g) it turns light blue.

For what is limewater a reagent?

for carbon dioxide

For what is bromine water a reagent?

for sulfur dioxide. It is a clear yellow-brown liquid.  When Sulfur dioxide is dissolved in bromine water, the yellow colour will disappear.

Why does the surface area influence the rate of the reaction?

Reaction between a solid fuel and oxygen can only take place at the surface of the solid, because particles need to collide with one another. The oxygen for the air can penetrate the powdered iron much depper than when you burn 'ordinary' powdered iron.
