Explain the Indian Appropriantions Act I

In 1851, Congress passed an act that  provided funds to move Indian tribes onto farming reservations and hopefully keep them under control. Indians were not allowed to leave the reservations without permission.

The Treaty of Fort Laramie of 1851 created a short period of peace which allowed more settlers to enter or travel legally through tribal lands.

On June 25th and 26th, 1876, The Sioux and Cheyenne fought agains the US army in Montana. They killed 250 men of the U.S. The Sioux were to tired to fight back and they were marched back to the reservations.

In 1924 the congress recognised NA’s as full citizens, gave them the right to vote.

Explain the Indian reorganization Act:

The Indians were encouraged to set up their own governments and ended the selling of plots of land to whites on the reservations. Stopped the efforts to make Native Americans give up their own religion and culture.

Explain the Indian Claims Commision:

In 1946 the government set up a commision to deal with claims of unfair treatment or fraud.

Explain the American Indian Movement:

In 1972, there was a protest march in Washington called the 'Trail of Broken Treaties'. They occupied the village for 71 days because they demanded the return of lands taken in violation of treaty agreements.

What were the effects on Native American activism?

Activism led to a wider recognition of NA culture and expansion of efforts to teach and preserve indigenous languages. There were several lawsuits so they could get their land back. Now tribes (pan-indianism) are working together for the future.
