Key Term- Alternative Spiritualities: Describe (3 points and an example).

It is an umbrella term for many different religions and spiritualities which contrasts with mainstream, traditional Christianity.

E.g. New Age, Paganism, Mind-Body-Spirit.

These are often grouped together but have differences. For example, some worship nature, others; deities, angels, spirits.  

It came about laregely due to the influence of Eastern religions e.g. Buddhism and hinduism which were transmitted with the colonial context.

What is a problem with Alternative Spiritualities? Give an example to back this up.

They are often controversial as many do not consider them seriously and so they are often ridiculed and made fun of as they are not seen as a proper religion.

E.g. when the Druid Network was granted charitable status there was much controversy saying it was not a proper religion however it met the criteria:

*It has a God/ supreme being- nature is considered to be the supreme being

*It uses worship and ritual to enable the relationship between the believer and the supreme being.

*It has a core system of conduct.

*It has positive, beneficial morals and ethics.

How have alternative spiritualities caused changes in British Society? (5 points)

Represents some of the biggest changes in British society over the last 65 years due to:

its link to secularization.

changing gender relations- more emphasis on women.

Religious Pluralization

People began "doing religion differently"
* People identified as both Christian while following beliefs from Alternative Spiritualities and so this caused more privitization and personalisation of religion.
