Religion in Modern Britain- The long 60's

6 important questions on Religion in Modern Britain- The long 60's

What was the effect of Affluence on Youth Clubs?

Youth clubs were originally set up to aid the process of growing up and to offer both social and religious activity for young adults.
A more affluent society meant that young people could afford to go to new meeting places and do things they could not before and so youth clubs declined.
Young people felt it was their right to live the way they wanted to. They also preferred to go out on a Saturday night and so were less likely to go to church in the morning.

What was the effect of Affluence on immigration?

An affluent society attracted migrants as it offered more opportunities an more financial security.

It brought different forms of Christianity to Britain and they often joined Pentecostal or Adventist churches- there was a large growth in these in 1960's.

Relates to Mcleods idea of not necessarily a decline but a relocation- just because there is an institutional decline does not mean there is not increases in congregations.

+ve: Immigration allowed for growth in certain congregations.
-ve: Immigration may have caused a decline in traditional Christianity.

What affect did immigration have on the government?

The government started to realize that religious pluralization was very much present and so began to implement it into school curriculum's to help prepare students for a multi-cultural society; giving them knowledge and respect for diversity.

What is the Inter-Faith Network?

It is an organisation which was established in 1987 and was set up to promote inter-faith relations and so to bring majority faiths together and promote engagement.

It links many organisations together and the leaders meet to discuss issues relating to them.

It promotes active involvement through providing curricular documents for schools.

Works on a local level also to enable people to learn more about other religions.

What are the benefits of IFN? What is a problem?

1. Enables better relations (trust)
2. All work for a common purpose (respectfully, to understand one another).
3. To understand religious plurality

Problem:
Who represents each religion? How is this decided due to the varying degrees of observance in religions?

What are the problems with Multi-faith Spaces?

1. Naming it: 'prayer room?' 'meditation room?' 'silent room?'
2. Furniture? Symbols, all or none?
3. They do not actually promote genuine encounters- more people do it because of lack of choice (more encounters in neutral areas, i.e. cafe's or social spaces).
