7 important questions on Survey Research - pages 172-200

Household drop-off survey

A paper-and-pencil survey that is administered by dropping off at the respondents household and, either picking it up at a later time, or having the respondent return it directly.

1.     Selecting the survey method

Selecting the type of survey you are going to use is one of the most critical decisions in many social research contexts. Decisions regarding what type of survey method to use usually depends on the target population, the kind of information that is being sought, and the availability of resources- including budget and time.

Dichotomous response format

A question response format that allows the respondent to choose between only two possible responses.
  • Higher grades + faster learning
  • Never study anything twice
  • 100% sure, 100% understanding

Ordinal response format

A response format in which respondents are asked to rank the possible answers in order of preference.

Interval level respons format

A response measured using numbers spaced at equal intervals where the size of the interval between potential response values is meaningful. An example would be a 1-to-5 response scale

One of the most difficult tasks facing the survey designer involves the ordening of questions. When you think about question placement, consider the following potential issue:

1.The answer may be influenced by prior questions
2.The question may come too early or too late to arouse interest
3.The survey may not receive sufficient attention because of the questions around it.

Explain why a deductive approach is related to positivism and an inductive approach is related to interpretevism. Use examples to explain.

-Positivists prefer a structured methodology. This can be achieved by starting with hypotheses (deductive approach).
-Positivists prefer a detached stance. This can be achieved by testing hypotheses from former research.

-Interpretivists. The deductive approach is just one way by simplifying the research. Rich insight is therefore lost.

-Interpretivists do not value law like generalizations as much, transferability is different from the positivists’ stance. The link to former research is thus less important, constructing theory which fits this particular research is more important.

The question on the page originate from the summary of the following study material:

  • A unique study and practice tool
  • Never study anything twice again
  • Get the grades you hope for
  • 100% sure, 100% understanding
