What are the 3 mean characteristics of a Qualitative researchers and give more context were needed:
Reflexive awareness -- ability to:
> Think abstractly
> Step back & critically analyze situations
> Recognize the tendency towards bias
Openness
> Be flexible and open to helpful criticism
> Appreciative inquiry
Sensitivity
> Sensitive to the words, interpretations & actions of respondents -
What are the three qualitative analysis principles? And the triangle
1) Noticing concepts
2) Collecting examples of these concepts
3) Analyzing these concepts in order to find communalities
The traingle is Describe, Classify and Connect -
Describe Deductive research
Begins with a General theory/ hypothese & test it trough specific observations. Broad framework --> Narrower conclusions
Structured interviews
- Interview themes based on theoretical model
- Set-up of analytical categories based on the conceptual framework of the study -
What are the three types (degree) of analysis?
1) Content analysis
2)Thematic analysis
3)Grounded theory
!!No clear boundaries in types of analysis!! -
Code structure/ Coding Guide
- Complication of emerging codes
- Brief definitions or properties for each code (can also include illustrative coded pieces/ quotes)
- Provides guidance for when & how to use the codes
- Will evolve throughout the analysis (refining)
- You continuously have discussions with your research team -

What are import questions recarding Vertical Analysis?
- What is the core of the interviews?
- What is the genuine perspective of the respondents?
- Which statements can be made out of the sum of quotes?
- And why -- What is the line of argumentation?
- Helps you to establish links between codes, and hierarchies between codes/ themes
- Vertical analysis is needed in addition to horizontal analysis -
Open coding (what/ how)
- Analytical process through which concepts are identified (sensitizing concepts)
- Their properties and dimensions ar discovered in data
How?
- Analyze the data minutely; Ask the data specific set of questions
- Comparing text frames on similarities/ differences
- What is the underlying concept?
- Labeling fragments with keywords: concepts and categories include as many as possible
- Very VERTICAL, so more HORIZONTAL analysis needed -
Deductive + Inductive Research + pitfall in OPEN CODING
Deductive research is guided by theory --> testing hypothesis
Inductive research is open to all conepts
--> Pitfall deductive research: too much fitting in existing boxes (closed mind)
--> Pitfall inductive research: too free in accepting all concepts (messy code book) -
Axial coding (What + How)
- Process of relating categories to their subcategories;
- Linking categories at the level of their properties and dimensions
How?
- Examine a phenomenom in terms of properties and dimensions
- What is the underlying pattern?
- Link categories on that level
- Very HORIZONTAL, so more VERTICAL ANALYSIS needed -

What is a strong tension regarding coding:
The tension between
- Label everything (but how to decide on what is important?)
AND
- Label on a too abstract level (jump to conclusions)
- Higher grades + faster learning
- Never study anything twice
- 100% sure, 100% understanding
