5 important questions on Social Proof - Goal framing theory: interventions & spreading effects - Goal framing theory

How can you implement the hedonic goal in social problems?

  • By making things fun (sound effects, gamification, etc.) → the funness wears of after a time.
  • By making things less effortful or lowering obstacles.

How can you implement the gain goal in social problems?

  • Punishments, like a fine, are effective, but only if the probability that you are actually punished is high enough. Other wise the effort of doing the right thing still outreaches the risk of getting punished.

How is the normative goal negatively influenced?

The goal to act appropriately is weakend when people observe that others did not persue the goal to act appropiately and instead focus on for example, the hedonic goal. The normative goal is pushed to the back, because others violate the norm. This causes the effect that people become less normative in general, so also with other norms.

What does the cross-norm reinforcement effect mean?

The cross-norm reinforcement effect refers to a phenomenon where engaging in one pro-social behavior can positively influence and reinforce the likelihood of engaging in other pro-social behaviors. For example, if someone helps a woman pick up her fallen oranges, you are more likely to also help someone. People see others being pro-social, they are more likely to be pro social themselves and conform to the norm.

What is the effect of perceiving (intrinsic) motivation by others on e.g. a flyer on littering the flyer?

The flyer which says resident find it important to clean litter is less littered, because it shows the motivation others have to keep it clean. The flyer which says residents got money to clean the neighbourhood was littered more, because that doesn't make salient anyone cares.
