  • Why is Geo-Engineering of such big importance?

They are key to most construction projects. The biggest risks tend to be associated with the ground.
  • What is the pore fluid for unsaturated soils?

A mixture of air and water
  • By what activities is our hydro-mechanical system of soil influenced by?

External and environmental conditions; biological, electrical, thermal and chemical
  • What is a drained soil?

A soil in which the pore fluid is free to move in or out of the soil with no impact on the soil response.
  • Lecture 2: Soil Classification

This is a preview. There are 22 more flashcards available for chapter 11/02/2020

  • What are origins for soils?

Weathering (temperature), Erosion (Ice / Water), Transportation (e.g. Yellow River), Deposition (e.g. River Delta), Formed in situ (e.g. Decaying Vegetation) or Engineered Construction (e.g. Maasvlakte 2)
  • What is a braided river?

Quite wide and lots of different channels separated by small islands and the location of the river can change sideways by the amount of water
  • What is a liquefaction slide?

    A slope failure
  • Which particles are deposited first by a river?

Larger particles (e.g. Gravel) and smaller particles are deposited at lower river speeds (as a river gets nearer to the sea)
  • How are Dutch deltas characterized?

By liquefiable sands, soft organic clays and peat, and by heterogeneity
  • What do you do with a Cone Penetration Test (CPT)?

You push a cone down through the ground and you measure the resistance
