Sustainable Last- Mile delivery - Last-mile logistics in urban areas: challenges

4 important questions on Sustainable Last- Mile delivery - Last-mile logistics in urban areas: challenges

What major issues in last mile (urban) logistics do any type of transport have? What are the consequences?

• Increasing road congestion
• Energy use
• Environment (air quality)
• Safety
• Disturbance – noise, visual intrusion
• Access restrictions and narrow roads
• Lack of loading and unloading space
• Low emission zones in city centers

Consequences:
• Complex coordination and planning
• Trade-offs between priorities of different stakeholder groups

What major issues in last mile (urban) logistics do home deliveries have? What are the consequences?

• One-package-per-stop deliveries with tight delivery times (same-day or one-hour delivery)
• Attended deliveries (made within specified time slots) 
• Unattended delivery (made at anytime)
• “Ping-pong” effects

Consequences:
• Needless costs
• Harmful environmental effects
• Delivery with tight due times present much greater environmental footprint than planned deliveries

Why are (un)attended deliveries more difficult for LSP's?

Attended deliveries are more difficult for LSP’s. Rush – hours can be problem. Delivery time window concentration (ok for customers to deliver between 18 – 20 o’clock). You need more drivers for these two hours. You need more vans, more drivers, etc. for only those two hours. When deliveries are spreaded more over the day: utilization of assets is higher throughout the day.
