Quality Function Deployment
8 important questions on Quality Function Deployment
! Was ist QFD? Wofür wird es eingesetzt?
Primary Objectives:
- Understand Customer Requirements
- Determine in advance how Costumer will judge a products value in order to design it
- Obtain cross functional agreement and "buy-in" on the customer needs (Marketing, Engineering, Management, Manufacturing, Quality, etc.)
- Translate Customer needs into development goals and technical capabilities
- Focus on characteristics from the viewpoints of market segments, company, or technology-development needs
- Provide Documented Requirements Traceability
! Wie gehe ich vor?
- Product Planning
- Product Design
- Process Planning
- Process Control
- Each phase the QFD is represented by a chart matrix (house) throughout the entire system life cycle
- used for the first phase in the QFD process – the Product Planning phase
- helps product designers to identify customer requirements, relate them to engineering characteristics, identify tradeoffs, and to evaluate the characteristics of a potential product relative to competing products.
- is a kind of conceptual map that provides the means for inter-functional planning und communications
- translates customer needs into development goals and technical capabilities
! Was ist der Nutzen von QFD?
- ... for engineers it is a way to summarize basic data in usable form
- ... for marketing executives it represents the voice of the customer
- ... for general managers it is used to discover strategic opportunities
- Higher grades + faster learning
- Never study anything twice
- 100% sure, 100% understanding
!!! Welche Informationen benötige ich hierfür?
- What do customers really want? Customer Attributes (CA)
- Are all preferences equally important? Relative Importance (RI)
- Will delivering perceived need yield a competitive advantage? Customer Perceptions
- How can we change the product? (Engineering Characteristics (EC) & Objective Measures
- How much does engineering influence customer-perceived qualities? Relation Matrix
- How does one engineering change affect other characteristics? Roof Matrix
- How can we add customized data and information? Customer build part
! Will delivering perceived need yield a competitive advantage?
- To match or exceed a companies competition the company must first know where their product stands relative to their competitors (customer perceptions)
- Comparison with the competition can identify opportunities for improvement
- Identify possible and existing advantages for Customer Attributes, which are important to gain or maintain
- This section provides a natural link from product concept to a company’s strategic vision
! How can we change the product?
- Engineering Characteristics tell how to change the product in the language of the engineer (product description in measurable terms)
- List Engineering Characteristics that directly affect Customer Attributes
- The signs mean that increasing (+) or reducing (-) the specific Engineering Characteristic is improving product quality
- Add Objective Measures at the bottom of the house beneath the Customer Attributes
- Determine Measurement Units for each Engineering Characteristic and estimate “our- own” product
- Comparison with competitors by measuring their products for each Engineering Characteristic using the determined Measurement Units
- Yields an engineering stand relative to their competitors
! How much does engineering influence customer-perceived qualities?
- The Relationship Matrix shows how much each Engineering Characteristic (EC) affects each Customer Attribute (CA)
- If a EC affects no CA, it may be redundant to the EC list on the house, or you may have missed a Customer Attribute
- A CA unaffected by any EC presents opportunities to expand EC
- strength of each of these relationships is established by numbers or symbols
- check marks for positive and crosses for negative relationships
- different colors which indicate a strong (black) and a medium (grey) strength of relationship
! How does one engineering change affect other characteristics?
- Engineering is creative solutions and a balancing of objectives
- house of quality’s Roof Matrix helps engineers specify the various engineering features that have to be improved and their relationship
- The Roof Matrix facilitates the balance of engineering trade-offs when addressing customer benefits
- strength of each of these relationships is established by numbers or symbols
- use check marks for positive and crosses for negative relationships
- different colors which indicate a strong (black) and a medium (grey) strength of relationship
The question on the page originate from the summary of the following study material:
- A unique study and practice tool
- Never study anything twice again
- Get the grades you hope for
- 100% sure, 100% understanding
