The postmodernist interpretation of the avant garde does not accept the dichotomy between originality and repitition. Why?

Nothing is truly original in that it goes back to ground zero ( originary). For example, Duchamp's readymades followed the introduction of objets trouves in Dadaist collage which in turn followed the use by cubists of small pieces of real world material stuck on to the canvas of their painting. ( Kraussner)
A repetition can reveal something new, be a new manifesation of a different idea. For example Duchamp's urinal was not a repitition of his bottle rack because he signed it by the name of an imaginary artists and submitted it to a major New Yok exhibition.

In what way does this artwork exemplify changes in the artists space to work with

Duchamps In advance of the broken arm, which he first 'created' in 1915 and continued to create (using different shovels)until 1964 extends the space to work with by
- extending the media of art to mass produced objects ( ready made)
- extending the space the artist works in - this ewas created not ina studio but in a factory.
- by extending the sapce where such an artwork can be seen - on the street.

Who is this woman and why does she introduce the ideas as artist as artwork?

She is Rrose Selavy - one of the alter egos that Marcel Duchamp constructed for his artworks. The artist was an artwork, Other alter egos included R Mutt who signed the urinal.
The idea of artist as artwork grew. But the actual artist has become the artwork.
Examples Salavador Dali is as known for his moustache as his art. Josef beuys became an cinonic artists. In neo-avant garde the image of Cindy Sherman - playing different roles - has become the basis of her art.

The rejection of Art as an Institution and the Space to work with.

If they avant Garde reject art as an instiution it must find some other space to fit in. This could mean
- finding new artistic media e.g Duchamp's ready mades.
- finding new places to make or find art - eg Dychamp found his readymades in the praxis of life not in the Institution of Art.
- finding new places to see Art - eg in the shop where duchamp bought the snow shovel - his first ready made

The will to change the world and social change.

If Art is to be put in the praxis of life (Burger) it must change society. This does not necessarily mean political change - it can be purely social. For example an Avant Garde may aim to change the nature of the relationship between the specator and the artworka) In Duchamps ready mades the creation of the art work involves the artist and the spectatorb) In the situationist derive ( random walks) the spectator is the performer/creator.

The role of the artist in modernism and how does the historic avant garde change this?

In modernism art is autonomous - art for art's sake. An artwork is a product created by an individual artist.
In Avant Garde art - the role of the artists is changed in several differeent ways
a) the artist may not have 'created' a product e.g Ready mades.
b) the artist may not ne who you thibnk it is e.g. R Mutt, Rrose Selavy
c) The creation of art may be the product of a group of artists e.g performance art
d) the creation of Art may be in the mind of the spectator.
