Animal welfare

9 important questions on Animal welfare

What are the two things that we look at within the production narrative?

Intensifying and up-scaling

What are the pro's and con's of intenisification for animal welfare? Name 3 pro's and 2 con's

Pros: less labour needed per animal, controlled environment, temperature, ventiliation and diseases, more productive: control them.
Cons; diseases; more animals quicker spread of diseases and they have less space for their natural behaviour.

What are the pro's and con's of upscaling for animal welfare? Name 2 pros and three cons

Pros; less transport for animals on long distance, only transport is slaugtherhouse but this is often at the same place. Second is that there is more moeny to invest on welfare conditions.
Cons: Less attention for individual animals, employees need to be trained well, becasue activities shouldn't be done twice. With lots of animals the infectious rates are high as well.

What is extensive livestock production?

production approach towards farm animals with small use of inputs such as labour, fertilizers, and capital

What is intensive livestock production?

production approach towards farm animals in order to maximize production output, while minimizing production costs

What are 7 stressors by which health is challanged?

▪ Poor handling (shouting, hitting, unpredictable behaviour)
Transport (combination of many factors)
Social disturbance (isolation, regrouping, new individuals)
High stocking density (aggression, competition)
Barren environment (inability to perform natural behaviours)
Inadequate/unnatural feeding (stereotypies)
Unpleasant climatic conditions (heat/cold, draft)

What are four welfare consequences for broilers when there is selection on growth?

  • Unbalanced growth (enlarged breast muscle); they are too heavy on the front size.
  • Respiratory problems (panting, heart abnormalities, ascites, sudden death); is not developed in the short period. They have a lack of O2.
  • Behavioural changes: ● Locomotion down ● Sitting up  ● Scratching down
  • Leg problems (lameness, hock burns, footpad dermatitis)

What are 3 welfare consequences for dairy cattle when there is selection on grwoth?

Lower fertility
Higher risk on e.g. lameness, mastitis and ketosis
Behavioural time budget

What are welfare conditions of feeding?

  • Concentrates in the feed.
  • Feed restriction (quantity/quality)
  • High feeding motivation may results in abnormal behavuour (e.g. sows, broiler breeders, veal calves).
