What is a protected area?

A protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognized, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values.

What does governance by government look like?

Governance by government: Federal or national ministry/agency in charge; sub-national ministry/agency in charge; government-delegated management (e.g. to NGO)

What does shared governance look like?

Collaborative management (various degrees of influence); joint management (pluralist management board; transboundary management (various levels across international borders)

What does private governance look like?

By individual owner; by non-profit organisations (NGOs, universities, cooperatives); by forprofit organisations (individuals or corporate)

What does governance by indigenous peoples and local communities look like?

Indigenous peoples’ conserved areas and territories; community conserved areas – declared and run by local communities

What is a Conserved Area?

‘Primary conservation’ - areas that meet the IUCN definition of a protected area, but which are not officially recognised because the governance authority does not want the area to be designated as a protected area by the relevant national government.
