Practical Histology - Lower GI

3 important questions on Practical Histology - Lower GI

Why do the intestines of carnivores not contain Paneth’s cells?

Paneth cells secrete proteins (lysozyme) that protect the animal from infections by enteric pathogens, and help shape the composition of the indigenous microbiota.
For herbivores and omnivores it is very important to possess the right microbiota; these bacteria are necessary for the fermentation of plant (fiber rich) food.
They are not necessary in carnivores, because they have an extreme low stomach pH, a short intestine, and minimal fermentation, which made the necessity of Paneth cells insignificant.

How does an entero endocrine cell function?

The microvilli bend because the chyme passes and bends them. The hormone containing granula in the cell respond to this mechanical stimulus and secrete their hormones into the capillaries below.

Which part of the GI tract is indispensable or irreplaceable?

The duodenum, because this short part of the intestine contains the
Brunner’s glands and is also the place where the bile duct(s) and pancreatic ducts
connect to the GI-tract.
