- social control ensured everyone follow the rules

- freedom of individual was very discouraged
Today = Individualistic orientation
- people are free and make choices independent of others
- those choices are condemned or punished as little as possible

- puts pressure --> on solidarity
3. Compulsion to choose
- we feel free + independent
