What was the historical orientation and what is the orientation today, regarding individualization?

Explain.

Historical = Collectivist orientation
- one is member of community
- social control ensured everyone follow the rules
- they were corrected if they didn't
- freedom of individual was very discouraged

Today = Individualistic orientation
- people are free and make choices independent of others
- those choices are condemned or punished as little as possible

Individualization has 4 principles: What do they mean?

1. Dignity
2. Autonomy
3. Privacy
4. Self-development

1. Dignitiy --> of the human being
- every person = equal (regardless)

2. Autonomy --> on individual person
- person decides --> for themselves
- and take responsibility --> for their decisions

3. Privacy
- people are not disturbed --> in private affairs

4. Self-development
- individuals are given the opportunity
- to realize their --> own happiness

What are the 3 risks of individualization?

1. Difficult balance:
- self-interest --> social interest

2. Selfishness
- puts pressure --> on solidarity

3. Compulsion to choose
- we feel free + independent
- but at same time --> have to do a lot
- bc we have to decide --> it all for ourselves (not already done for us)
