Quality of water - membrane filtration

5 important questions on Quality of water - membrane filtration

What is a membrane?

When you make a sheet with holes that are very much smaller, we call this sheet a membrane.

How small can those holes be made?

they can be made so small, that only water molecules can pass through and hardly any other particles.

What happens when a membrane is situated between a compartment containing sea water and a compartment containing fresh water?

the molecules will try to migrate though the membrane from the fesh water to the salty water. However at the same time water molecules will ass from the salty water bk to the fresh water, just not nearly as many.

What happens after a time?

the same number of water molecules per second will migrate from fresh water to salty water as the other way around.  Looks if nothing is happening.

What do you do when there is equilibrium?

you apply a high pressure on the side of the sea water. This way you force the water molecules from the sea water to migrate to the fresh water. More fresh water, salt water saltier
