Waves - Wave dispersion and group speed

3 important questions on Waves - Wave dispersion and group speed

What does dispersion in water waves?

Wave dispersion means the separation of waves with different wave speeds. Waves with longer wavelengths travel fast than waves with shorter wave lenghts.

What is the difference in wave speed between deep water and shallow water?

Deep water (d > L/2)
- Wave speed depends on wavelength and wave period but not on water depth
- Long waves travel faster (dispersion)

Shallow water (d < L/20)
- Wave speed depends only on water depth and not on wavelength and wave period.
- Shallow-water waves are non-dispersive.

What are wave groups?

- Difference between wavelengths of two sets of waves are really small: the two sets will interfere, so there is one group left. Which is called the wave group.
