The early migrants in the post-war period were young men and were often transient workers- those who moved between Britain and their country.

-> this highlights the opportunities available which then encouraged other migrants.

- The pioneers helped to bring over relatives and other members who were supported by the pioneers in travel costs, housing, jobs etc.

Why did people migrate to Britain?

1. Increased wages- earned 30x more
-> idea to gather money and go back home to buy land and build houses and to raise social status, although many just chose to stay.

2. Better Education for children.

3. Improved quality of life.

4. Social security.

5. Health provisions.

What was the role of women?

Arrival of women and children strengthened family ties and religious observance and allowed for a greater desire to preserve culture and religion- something which was never a priority previously.

Women were very restricted due to many things;
language barrier- many rarely left the house unless accompanied by a close male relative.

In the 1970's there was recruitment carried out for women to work in factories due to the end of male migration and so many went on to do that and others began to do jobs in sewing or craftwork.
