Ecology - Feeding realtionships

5 important questions on Ecology - Feeding realtionships

Why do we call plants producers?

Because they provide food for other organisms. Producers are always the first link in a food chain.

Why do we call animals consumers?

Because they eat (consume) the substances made by plants.

What are secondary consumers?

Why are bacteria and fungi called decomposers?

Because they break down the remains left by the scavengers.

What are all substances recycled in in nature?

The nutrient cycle. Decomposers convert the substances from the dead remains of organisms into carbon dioxide, water and minerals. Carbon Dioxide and water can in turn be absorbed by producers and used in photosynthesis. The minerals can als be absorbed by producers. The substances from the plants eventually end up in plants again, via animals, scavengers, bacteria and fungi. In nature, all substances are recycled in this nutrient cycle.
